Hiring a Contractor
Before you hire
- Start with recommendations from people you trust, then look up reviews and any complaints.
- Confirm the license with your state or local licensing agency where one is required.
- For larger jobs, get at least two or three written estimates for the same scope of work.
- Before any work starts, sign a written contract.
Paying safely
- Pay in stages as the work is finished, and never far ahead of the work.
- On larger projects, ask for lien waivers as you pay.
- Hold the final payment until the work is done as agreed and you've checked it.
Bunkly’s field tipBe careful with anyone who shows up door to door, pushes you to decide right away, wants cash only or asks for a large payment up front. After a big storm, scammers often follow the weather.
