The short answer

No cost clothes, showers and hygiene items in California usually come from clothing closets, shelters and day centers, and 211 can point you to them. This guide covers where to shower and do laundry, how to get soap, diapers and pads, and what to wear to a job interview.

Hi friend. A hot shower, clean socks and a fresh shirt can change your whole day. I know how much it matters to feel like yourself, especially when you're headed to a job interview, an appointment or a new start.

Here is the easy first step: dial 211 and ask, "Where can I get a shower, laundry or no cost clothes near me?" Then use this guide for ideas, places to call and a few tips that stretch every dollar.

A few things to know

Where can I get no cost clothes?

Where can I get no cost clothes?

No cost clothes usually come from clothing closets at churches, missions, shelters and day centers. Some open on set days, and some give out a voucher you can use at a thrift store.

The best way to find what's open this week is a quick call.

How to find no cost clothes, step by step

  1. Dial 211 and say your city or ZIP and what you need, like "work clothes" or "kids' shoes."
  2. Ask which clothing closets are open this week, the hours, and if you need a referral.
  3. Call the place first to check sizes and what they have right now.
  4. Bring a bag, and any referral letter they asked for.
  5. If you need clothes for a job, say so. Some places keep interview outfits.
  6. If they're out, ask when new donations usually come in.

What to say when you call

"Hi. I'm looking for no cost clothes for [me, or my kids]. I'm near [your city or ZIP]."

"I need [work clothes, shoes, a coat, school clothes] in size [size]."

"Do I need a referral or an ID?"

"When is the best day to come?"

BUNKLY TIP

Ask about vouchers

Some shelters and churches hand out vouchers for thrift stores. It never hurts to ask, "Do you have a clothing voucher?" Easy peasy!

Where can I take a shower?

A few basics go a long way.
A few basics go a long way.

Showers are often at day centers, missions and some shelters. Here is a California example.

Times can change, so call first.

In other counties, ask 211 for "showers" or "day center." In Riverside, the county lists Path of Life Ministries as a shelter open 24 hours. Call 951.683.4101 and ask what they offer.

A simple shower bag

How do I keep my clothes clean on a budget?

Ask 211 about no cost laundry days near you.

Feeling fresh isn't a luxury. It's part of taking care of you, and you deserve that.

From the Bunklow team

How do I get hygiene items like soap, diapers and pads?

Here's something a lot of folks don't know: the USDA says SNAP can't buy nonfood items like hygiene products, cleaning supplies and paper goods. So these items usually come from other places.

EXAMPLE

Say you need diapers before payday in Sacramento

Say you're down to the last few diapers. You could dial 211 and ask for diaper help in Sacramento County, and also ask your local food pantry when you pick up food.

Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services at 916.456.1980 can point you to food help near you, and you can ask them about diapers too.

This is an example to show how it can go. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different.

BUNKLY TIP

Keep a little kit with you

A zip bag with a toothbrush, a few wipes, deodorant and a spare pair of socks fits in any backpack. It's a small thing that helps a lot.

Can my kids get pads at school, and are diapers taxed?

A couple of California rules can help your budget a little.

BUNKLY TIP

Take what you need

Pads at school are there for any student who needs them. Don't be shy about asking.

How do I take care of myself in hot weather?

These are simple, common sense ideas, not medical advice.

Dry socks are one of the best things you can do for your feet.
Dry socks are one of the best things you can do for your feet.

What should I wear to a job interview?

You don't need anything fancy. Clean, neat and comfortable is what matters most.

Questions people ask a lot

Do I need an ID to get no cost clothes?

Some places ask for one and many don't. Call ahead and ask.

Can I use SNAP for soap or toilet paper?

No. The USDA says SNAP can't buy hygiene items, cleaning supplies or paper products.

Where can I shower if I'm staying in my car?

Ask 211 for day centers with showers. In Contra Costa County, CARE Centers in Richmond and Walnut Creek offer showers and laundry.

How often do clothing closets get new things?

It depends on donations. Ask the closet which day is best to come.

Can I get a coat or shoes for my kids?

Many closets serve families. Say your kids' sizes when you call.

Is there no cost laundry anywhere?

Some day centers and churches offer it. Ask 211 what's near you.
