Getting ID and Documents Back

Guide 11 of 14

Real help, checked by hand. No sign up.

The short answer

To get a New Jersey ID, the MVC asks for documents that add up to 6 points, plus proof of address. This guide explains how to order a New Jersey birth certificate, replace a Social Security card and other papers, and keep them safe.

As of October 22, 2026. Made by the Bunklow team.

Hi friend. Losing your ID or papers can make everything harder, from getting a job to finding a place to live. The good news is you can get them back, one at a time. Let's walk through it together.

Here is the easy first step: get your birth certificate first. Most other papers need it. In New Jersey, you can order it from the state's Office of Vital Statistics and Registry online, by mail or in person.

A few things to know

Which paper should I get first?

Which paper should I get first?

For most people, the order looks like this:

Getting your papers back, step by step

  1. Get a certified copy of your birth certificate.
  2. Request a replacement Social Security card, if you need one. You may not need the card if you know your number.
  3. Gather proof of where you live in New Jersey.
  4. Get a New Jersey non driver ID or driver license at the MVC with your 6 Points of ID.

BUNKLY TIP

One step at a time

You don't have to do it all in one day. Each paper you get makes the next one easier.

How do I get my New Jersey birth certificate?

If you were born in New Jersey, the Office of Vital Statistics and Registry says you can order a copy:

If you were born in another state, order from that state's vital records office.

How do I get a New Jersey ID?

Each paper you get back makes the next step easier.
Each paper you get back makes the next step easier.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) uses a system called 6 Points of ID. For a standard license or non driver ID, the MVC says you must bring:

A REAL ID has separate document rules. All documents must be originals or certified copies. Documents in another language need a translation.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/6pointid.htm

Papers that can count as proof of address, per the MVC

SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say at the MVC

"Hi. I need a non driver ID. Here are my documents for 6 points."

"Can you check whether these add up before I wait in line?"

"If something is missing, what can I bring instead?"

What if I don't have a stable address?

Proof of address can be hard without a home. Ask a shelter, a county social services agency or a case manager whether they can help you get mail or a letter you can use.

Then check it against the MVC's list.

EXAMPLE

Say your wallet was stolen in Newark

Say your wallet was stolen and you were born in New Jersey. You could order your birth certificate from VitalChek, or go to the walk in center in Trenton. Then you could check if you need a new Social Security card, or just know your number. With your birth certificate and other papers that add up to 6 points, plus proof of address, you could go to the MVC for a non driver ID.

This is an example to show how it can work. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different. Sources: https://www.nj.gov/health/vital/ and https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card and https://www.nj.gov/mvc/license/6pointid.htm

How do veterans get their discharge papers?

You can request your DD 214 from the National Archives. See Guide 9.
