As of October 22, 2026. Made by the Bunklow team.

A few things to know

What kinds of housing help are there?

What kinds of housing help are there?

Housing help usually falls into three buckets. Knowing which one you need makes every phone call faster.

How to start, step by step

  1. Pick your bucket: keeping, finding, or getting back into a home.
  2. Dial 211. Say your county and what you need, like "I'm behind on rent."
  3. Ask for rent help programs, housing counseling and legal aid near you.
  4. Write down every name, number and date. Keep copies of your lease and notices.
  5. If you got any court papers, call legal aid right away. Don't wait.
  6. Follow up when they tell you to. Programs move faster when you call back.
SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say when you call 211

"Hi. I live in [county]. I'm behind on rent by [amount] and I'm worried about losing my home."

"Are there rent help programs open right now?"

"Can you connect me with no cost legal help for renters?"

"What papers should I have ready?"

I'm behind on rent. What should I do?

Take a breath. There are steps you can take today.
Take a breath. There are steps you can take today.

First, take a breath. Being behind is scary, but acting early gives you the most choices.

EXAMPLE

Say you got an eviction notice

Say you got a written notice to leave from your landlord. This notice only starts the process. It is not a court order. The landlord still has to file a case in court and win it.

Ohio Legal Help says the eviction process usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, and after a court summons arrives you have about a month before any set out can happen. So you likely have more time, and more options, than you think. Contact legal aid as soon as you get a notice.

This is an example to show how it can go, not legal advice. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different. Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.ohiolegalhelp.org/topic/eviction

BUNKLY TIP

Get it in writing

Any payment plan or promise from your landlord, ask for it in a text, email or letter. It protects you and them!

How do security deposits work in Ohio?

Here's what to know.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.ohiolegalhelp.org/

Protect your deposit when you move out

What if my home needs repairs?

Landlords are expected to keep a home safe and livable, and to make repairs. Ohio Legal Help explains your options.

If the landlord won't fix a problem, Ohio has a process called rent escrow. Here's what to know:

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.ohiolegalhelp.org/topic/repairs

Never just stop paying rent. Rent escrow has steps that have to be followed, so talk with legal aid first.

How do I find a place I can afford?

EXAMPLE

Say you're on a voucher waiting list in Toledo

Say you applied for a voucher months ago. You could call Lucas Metropolitan Housing to make sure your address and phone are current, so you don't miss a letter.

While you wait, you could dial 211 about rent and deposit help, look for listings on OhioHousingLocator.org, or call a HUD counselor at 800.569.4287.

This is an example to show how it can go. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different.

I already lost my home. How do I get back in?

Every day is a chance for a new start.
Every day is a chance for a new start.

Getting back into a home is a process, not a single phone call. Keep going. Every call gets you a little closer.

From the Bunklow team

How do I get help with heating and utility bills?

Ohio has several energy programs, run through local Community Action and energy assistance providers. Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://energyhelp.ohio.gov/

What if I'm treated unfairly?

Think you were treated differently because of your race, color, religion, sex, military status, family (like having kids), ancestry, disability or national origin? You can report it.

Keep a housing folder

Questions people ask a lot

Can my landlord lock me out or shut off my utilities?

Ohio Legal Help says a landlord has to go through the court eviction process. If you're locked out or your utilities are shut off, call legal aid right away.

How long is the wait for Section 8?

It depends on the housing agency, and many have long waits. Ask them directly and keep your contact info updated.

Is rent help available right now?

Programs open and close. Dial 211 and ask what's open in your county today. If you have children at home, ask your county JFS office about PRC emergency help.

Do I need a lawyer to go to court?

You don't have to have one, but no cost legal help can make a big difference. Some Ohio cities, like Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo, have Right to Counsel programs that give no cost lawyers to some tenants. See Guide 13.

How fast should I get my deposit back?

Check the official page at ohiolegalhelp.org, and give your landlord your new address in writing. Call legal aid if it doesn't come.

Can I get help with my heating bill?

Yes, maybe. The HEAP Winter Crisis Program runs November 2, 2026 through March 31, 2027. Apply at energyhelp.ohio.gov.

What does a housing counselor do?

HUD says they help with renting, avoiding eviction or foreclosure, and budgeting. Call 800.569.4287.
