A few things to know

Where can I get no cost clothes?

Where can I get no cost clothes?

No cost clothes usually come from clothing closets at churches, missions, shelters and day centers. Some open on set days, and some give out a voucher you can use at a thrift store.

The best way to find what's open this week is a quick call.

How to find no cost clothes, step by step

  1. Dial 211 and say your city or ZIP and what you need, like "work clothes" or "kids' shoes."
  2. Ask which clothing closets are open this week, the hours, and if you need a referral.
  3. Call the place first to check sizes and what they have right now.
  4. Bring a bag, and any referral letter they asked for.
  5. If you need clothes for a job, say so. Some places keep interview outfits.
  6. If they're out, ask when new donations usually come in.
SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say when you call

"Hi. I'm looking for no cost clothes for [me, or my kids]. I'm near [your city or ZIP]."

"I need [work clothes, shoes, a coat, school clothes] in size [size]."

"Do I need a referral or an ID?"

"When is the best day to come?"

BUNKLY TIP

Ask about vouchers

Some shelters and churches hand out vouchers for thrift stores. It never hurts to ask, "Do you have a clothing voucher?" Easy peasy!

Where can I take a shower?

A few basics go a long way.
A few basics go a long way.

Showers are often at day centers, missions and some shelters. Times can change, so call first.

A simple shower bag

How do I keep my clothes clean on a budget?

Ask 211 about no cost laundry days near you.

Feeling fresh isn't a luxury. It's part of taking care of you, and you deserve that.

From the Bunklow team

How do I get hygiene items like soap, diapers and pads?

Here's something a lot of folks don't know: the USDA says SNAP can't buy nonfood items like hygiene products, cleaning supplies and paper goods. So these items usually come from other places.

EXAMPLE

Say you need diapers before payday in Pittsburgh

Say you're down to the last few diapers. You could dial 211 and ask for diaper help in Allegheny County, and also ask your local food pantry when you pick up food.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's call center at 412.460.3663 ext. 655 can point you to food help near you, and you can ask about diapers too.

This is an example to show how it can go. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different.

BUNKLY TIP

Keep a little kit with you

A zip bag with a toothbrush, a few wipes, deodorant and a spare pair of socks fits in any backpack. It's a small thing that helps a lot.

How do I take care of myself in hot weather?

These are simple, common sense ideas, not medical advice.

Dry socks are one of the best things you can do for your feet.
Dry socks are one of the best things you can do for your feet.

How do I stay warm and dry in cold weather?

Pennsylvania winters can be dangerous. These are simple ideas, not medical advice.

Where can I get diapers and period products?

Diapers can't be bought with WIC, SNAP or EBT benefits, so diaper banks help fill the gap. Most diaper banks don't hand out diapers directly.

They supply partner agencies, like social service offices, schools, libraries and churches.

BUNKLY TIP

Ask at WIC and the pantry too

WIC can't buy diapers, but WIC offices and food pantries often know which nearby groups hand them out. It never hurts to ask. You've got this!

What should I wear to a job interview?

You don't need anything fancy. Clean, neat and comfortable is what matters most.

Are there ways to save on clothes and basics in Pennsylvania?

Yes, a couple of real ones.

Before a big shopping trip

Questions people ask a lot

Do I need an ID to get no cost clothes?

Some places ask for one and many don't. Call ahead and ask.

Can I use SNAP for soap or toilet paper?

No. The USDA says SNAP can't buy hygiene items, cleaning supplies or paper products.

Where can I shower if I'm staying in my car?

Ask 211 for day centers with showers near you. Shelters and day centers often know who has open shower times.

How often do clothing closets get new things?

It depends on donations. Ask the closet which day is best to come.

Can I get a coat or shoes for my kids?

Many closets serve families. Say your kids' sizes when you call.

Is there no cost laundry anywhere?

Some day centers and churches offer it. Ask 211 what's near you.
