VA says you may be eligible for VA health care if you served in the active military, naval or air service and didn't get a dishonorable discharge. If you enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered active duty after October 16, 1981, VA says you generally must have served 24 continuous months or the full period you were called to active duty, though some exceptions apply.

From the Bunklow team

Who can help me with VA benefits at no cost?

The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) helps veterans, families and survivors file VA disability, pension and survivor claims, and appeals, at no cost. TVC says its benefits advisors are veterans themselves, with offices across Texas, many inside VA facilities.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://tvc.texas.gov/claims/

EXAMPLE

Say you want to file a disability claim

Say you have hearing loss and back pain from your service, and you've never filed a claim. You could call your County Veteran Service Office and ask for an appointment. They can explain the steps and help you file, at no cost.

You could also call the Texas Veterans Commission at 800.252.8387 and book a claims appointment.

This is an example to show how it can work. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different. Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://tvc.texas.gov/claims/

What kinds of VA claims can TVC help with?

TVC's claims page explains the main types in plain terms. Here's a short version.

What to bring to your claims appointment

How do I get my discharge papers back?

If you lost your DD 214, you can request a copy of your military records from the National Archives. A Texas Veterans Commission advisor or county veteran service officer can help you ask for them.

Have your full name used in service, your service number or Social Security number, branch, and dates of service ready.
