How to make one

  1. Get a zip bag or small tote.
  2. Add water and snacks that won't melt.
  3. Add socks and hygiene items.
  4. Add a card with 211 and other helpful numbers.

What about winter?

Virginia winters can be cold, especially in the mountains and on windy nights. In winter, add a hat, gloves and hand warmers.

BUNKLY TIP

Ask what people need

If you know a shelter or outreach team, ask what's most needed right now.

How do I give it kindly?

Make eye contact and smile. Say hello.

Respect their answer if they say no.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

What you might say

"Hi. I made this for you, if you'd like it."

"Take care of yourself."

Where else can I help?

Food banks, shelters and day centers often need volunteers and donations. In the Richmond area, FeedMore welcomes volunteers.

In Northern Virginia, the Capital Area Food Bank does too. Dial 211 to find places near you.

EXAMPLE

Say your family wants to help in Virginia Beach this summer

You could make bags with water, snacks and socks. You could call a local program, like a food pantry or shelter, to ask what they need. Then you could volunteer together.

BUNKLY TIP

Water is a great gift

On hot days, a cold bottle of water can mean a lot.

What should I leave out?

Leave out things that spoil, medicine, and anything sharp. Skip glass bottles.

Good places to share it

What do people need most in each season in Virginia?

Virginia's weather changes a lot from the mountains to the coast, and needs change with it. Here's a simple guide to what helps most, when.

Where can I donate in Virginia?

If you'd like to give more than a bag, local groups can put your gift to work. Call first, because each place has its own needs and drop off times.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to ask before you drop off

"What do you need most right now?"

"What can't you take?"

"When and where can I drop things off?"

EXAMPLE

Say your church group in Virginia Beach wants to help this winter

You could call a local shelter to ask what they need most. You could make winter blessing bags at your next meeting. You could sign up to serve a meal together. Every bit of kindness counts.

How do I plan a blessing bag day with a group?

Making bags together is a lot of fun, and many hands make it go fast. Here's a simple way to plan one with your church, school, club or neighbors.

BUNKLY TIP

Every bag is a hug

You might never know how much one bag helped. Trust that it did.

How can kids and families help together?

Giving together is a lovely way to teach kindness.

Questions people ask a lot

Can I give cash?

That's up to you. A blessing bag is another way to help.

What if they say no?

That's okay. Respect their choice.

Can kids help?

Yes. Making bags is a great family project.

Where can I donate extra items?

Ask a local shelter or pantry what they need.

What's the most useful item?

Socks and water are always needed.

How do I make the most of each call?

Calling for help can feel like a lot. A little planning makes each call easier, and you'll get further, faster.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

If you get put on hold or cut off

"Hi, I was just talking with someone about (what you need), and we got cut off."

"Can you help me pick up where we left off?"

"Is there a direct number I can use if this happens again?"

Bunkly, the Bunklow mascot
BUNKLY TIP

Keep going, friend

If one place can't help, ask them who can. Each call gets you closer.

What if I'm told no, or put on a waitlist?

A no from one place isn't a no from everyone. Programs have different rules, funds and space, and things change from week to week.

Asking for help, and asking again, takes strength. I'm cheering you on every step of the way.
