A few things to know

Who can I call right now?

Who can I call right now?

You can call even if you're not sure it's "bad enough." Advocates listen, help you think through your choices, and never judge.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say when you call

"Hi. I'm not safe at home, and I don't know what to do."

"I'm calling from [your city or county]. Can you help me find a safe place?"

"I have [number] kids with me." Say if you have pets too. Some centers can help with pets.

"Is it safe for you to call me back at this number?" Tell them if it isn't.

BUNKLY TIP

A quick exit

Many hotline websites have a quick exit button that takes you off the page fast. On a shared device, you can also use a private or incognito window. Little things like that can help you stay safe.

How do I know if it's abuse?

You deserve to feel safe and respected.
You deserve to feel safe and respected.

Abuse isn't only hitting. The National Domestic Violence Hotline says abuse is about power and control, and that even one or two of these behaviors is a red flag:

If any of this sounds familiar, you can call an advocate just to talk. No one deserves abuse of any kind, for any reason.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.thehotline.org/identify-abuse/domestic-abuse-warning-signs/

How do I make a safety plan?

A safety plan is a simple, personal plan for staying safer, whether you stay, are thinking about leaving, or have already left. The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers no cost help making one with a live advocate.

A simple safety plan, step by step

  1. Pick a safe place to go, like a friend's home, a public place, or a domestic violence center.
  2. Choose a code word for friends or family that means "call for help."
  3. Keep important numbers memorized or written somewhere safe.
  4. Pack a small bag with copies of key papers, medicine, a phone charger and some cash, and keep it where it can't be found, or with someone you trust.
  5. Plan how you would get out of your home quickly, and practice it with your kids if it's safe.
  6. Call an advocate to talk your plan through.

Papers and things to take, if you can

You don't have to have it all figured out to reach out. One call is enough for today, friend.

From the Bunklow team

Where can I stay if I need to leave?

Advocates can talk with you about safe housing options.
Advocates can talk with you about safe housing options.

Illinois has domestic violence programs throughout the state. IDHS says they offer a 24 hour hotline, counseling, safety planning, legal advocacy, children's services, and temporary food and housing.

Some also help with emergency medical care, transportation, jobs and child care.

How do I get an order of protection in Illinois?

In Illinois, a court order to keep an abuser away is called an Order of Protection. As of October 17, 2026, here's what Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO) says:

This is general information, not legal advice. For help with your situation, talk with an advocate or a lawyer. See Guide 13 for no cost legal help.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.illinoislegalaid.org/legal-information/getting-domestic-violence-order-protection

EXAMPLE

Say you want to ask for an order of protection

Say your ex has been threatening you, and you want a court order to keep them away. You could use ILAO's no cost Easy Form to make your petition, then file it at the circuit court in your county. There's no fee to file, and you can ask for an Emergency Order at the same time.

You could also call your local domestic violence program or the Illinois hotline at 877.863.6338 first. Advocates can explain the steps and may go with you.

This is an example to show how it can work. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different. Sources: https://www.illinoislegalaid.org/legal-information/getting-domestic-violence-order-protection and https://www.dhs.state.il.us/page.aspx?item=30275

Can I keep my new address private?

Illinois has an Address Confidentiality Program (ACP), run by the Illinois Attorney General. It gives you a substitute address to use instead of your home, school or work address with state and local government agencies.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/safer-communities/supporting-victims-of-crime/address-confidentiality-program/

What housing help is there if I'm a survivor?

ILAO says survivors who rent may be able to end their lease early so they can leave and stay safe, even if the lease is only spoken, not written. In some cases, survivors can ask for an emergency lock change to keep the abuser out.

If you live in HUD assisted housing, like public housing or a Housing Choice Voucher, HUD has extra protections for survivors through VAWA. HUD says:

Can I get help paying for costs from a violent crime?

The Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Program, run by the Attorney General, may pay you back for costs from a violent crime, up to $45,000 ($27,000 for crimes before August 7, 2022). It can cover things like:

The Attorney General's office encourages all victims of violent crime to apply. Call the Crime Victims Assistance Line at 800.228.3368 (711 relay) to learn more.

BUNKLY TIP

Kids and pets, too

When you call a center, tell them about your kids and pets. Ask what support they have for children, and if they can help with a safe place for your pet. You're doing so great by asking.

Does it cost money to get an order of protection in Illinois?

No. ILAO says there's no fee to file a petition for an Order of Protection.

Will the hotline tell anyone I called?

The hotline is private. Ask the advocate any questions you have about privacy when you call.

Can I bring my kids to a shelter?

Many centers serve parents with children. Ask the center when you call.

What if I'm not ready to leave?

That's OK. Advocates can help you make a safety plan while you stay, and you can call back any time.

I live in public housing. Can I be evicted because of the abuse?

HUD says VAWA protects survivors in HUD assisted housing from eviction because of the abuse committed against them.

Do I have to leave my home to get help?

No. IDHS says you do not have to leave the abuser or your home to get help from a domestic violence program.
