A few things to know

Where can I get no cost legal help?

Where can I get no cost legal help?

Legal aid offices give no cost civil legal help to people with low incomes, on things like evictions, benefits, family law and consumer problems. Each office decides who it can serve and which counties it covers, so call and ask.

What to do when you get a notice, step by step

  1. Read the whole paper. Write down the date you got it and every deadline on it.
  2. Call legal aid or Eviction Help Illinois right away. Say you got a notice and give the dates.
  3. Dial 211 and ask about emergency rent help, if the notice is about rent.
  4. Keep paying what you can, and get a receipt every time.
  5. Save every letter, text, lease and receipt in one folder.
  6. If you get court papers, act fast. Go to every court date.
SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say when you call legal aid

"Hi. I got a [notice, eviction summons] on [date]."

"I live in [your county]. Can you help me, or tell me who can?"

"I rent from a [landlord or company], and my lease [is or isn't] in writing."

"What should I do before my deadline?"

BUNKLY TIP

Count the days on a calendar

Mark the date you got the paper, then count each deadline on a calendar. Ask legal aid to double check your dates with you.

What does an eviction notice mean?

A notice from your landlord is an important paper. Here's what to know:

This is general information, not legal advice.

EXAMPLE

Say you got a notice for late rent

Say your rent was late and you got a notice from your landlord on a Friday. It doesn't mean you must be out by then. You could call Eviction Help Illinois that day at 855.631.0811, give them the date you got the notice, and ask about rent help through 211.

This is an example to show how it can work. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different. It is not legal advice. Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.illinoislegalaid.org/evictionhelpillinois

What if I get eviction papers from court?

Act right away. The Illinois Eviction Summons, the paper you get when you're sued, says:

This is general information, not legal advice. See the county list for legal aid near you.

Keep these in one folder

Paperwork can feel scary, but you are not alone in this. One call to legal aid can change everything, friend.

From the Bunklow team

Can my landlord lock me out or shut off my utilities?

ILAO says landlords need a court order to evict, and only the sheriff can carry it out.

How do I get my security deposit back?

Here's what to know.

BUNKLY TIP

Take move out photos

When you move out, take photos and a short video of every room, with the date. It's one of the best ways to protect your deposit. You've got this!

What if I'm treated unfairly because of who I am?

Think you were treated differently because of your race, disability, family, source of income (like a Housing Choice Voucher) or who you are? You can report it to the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR).

Check the full list on the official page.

Can an eviction case be sealed?

Sometimes. In some cases, a judge may seal an eviction court file, so it's harder for others to see.

Ask legal aid if sealing could help you.

I live in Chicago. Can I get a no cost lawyer for eviction?

You may. The City of Chicago's Right to Counsel program gives full legal representation to eligible tenants facing eviction.

As of October 17, 2026, the City says you may qualify if you:

Call the Early Resolution Program at 855.956.5763 to get connected. It offers no cost legal help and mediation, and referrals to rental assistance.

Can my landlord evict me without going to court?

ILAO says landlords need a court order, and only the sheriff can carry it out. Call legal aid if you're locked out.

What should I do with an eviction notice?

Write down the date, keep the paper, and call Eviction Help Illinois at 855.631.0811. Check the details on the official page.

What happens if I miss my court date?

The Eviction Summons says the judge may decide the case without you, and you could lose by default.

I can't afford the court fees. What can I do?

File an Application for Waiver of Court Fees. Illinois courts must accept the statewide form.

When should I get my security deposit back?

Check the official page at illinoislegalaid.org, and call legal aid if it doesn't come.

Who can help me with court questions?

Call or text Illinois Court Help at 833.411.1121.
