A few things to know

Who can I call right now?

Who can I call right now?

If you're in danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is open 24 hours a day at 800.799.7233.

They can talk with you, help you make a safety plan, and connect you with a program near you.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say when you call

"I'm not safe at home, and I need help."

"I'm in (town or county)."

"I have (number) kids with me," if you do.

"Can you help me find a safe place to stay?"

Bunkly, the Bunklow mascot
BUNKLY TIP

Have a code word

Pick a word with a friend or family member that means "call for help." It can make a big difference.

Are there domestic violence programs in Michigan?

Yes. There are programs all over Michigan that offer shelter, safety planning, counseling and help with court.

The Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence works with programs across the state. Local programs like First Step in Wayne County, HAVEN in Oakland County, Turning Point in Macomb County and the YWCA West Central Michigan in Grand Rapids are listed later in this guide.

How to make a safety plan, step by step

  1. Think about the safest way out of your home, and where you could go.
  2. Keep important papers, medicines and a phone charger where you can grab them.
  3. Tell someone you trust what's going on, and agree on a code word.
  4. Save the hotline number under a different name in your phone.
  5. Call a domestic violence program to plan the next steps with you.
Mount Clemens, Macomb County
Mount Clemens, Macomb County

How can I keep my new address private?

Michigan's Address Confidentiality Program, run by the Attorney General, gives survivors a substitute address to use with state and local agencies, so the person hurting you can't find you through public records. A domestic violence program can help you apply.

Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.michigan.gov/ag/initiatives/address-confidentiality-program

Can the court protect me?

In Michigan, you can ask the court for a Personal Protection Order (PPO). Michigan Legal Help has plain language guides and forms about PPOs.

A domestic violence program can help you through the steps.

Things to grab if you need to leave fast, only if it's safe

Can I get help with housing?

Yes. Domestic violence programs can help with shelter and longer term housing.

If you have a lease, you may have rights to end it early for safety. Ask a domestic violence program or legal aid. MDHHS may help with a deposit and moving costs through State Emergency Relief.

EXAMPLE

Say you need to leave tonight with your kids in Oakland County

If you're in danger, you'd call 911. When you're safe, you'd call HAVEN or the National Domestic Violence Hotline to ask about a safe place to stay tonight. Later, they could help you with a safety plan and a PPO.

Questions people ask a lot

Do I have to call the police?

No. You choose. A domestic violence program can help you either way.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes. Most domestic violence shelters welcome children.

Can I bring my pet?

Some programs can help with pets. Ask when you call.

What if I'm not sure it's abuse?

You can still call. They'll listen and help you sort it out.

Bunkly, the Bunklow mascot
BUNKLY TIP

You deserve to be safe

You did nothing wrong. Reaching out is brave, and there are people ready to help you.

How do I make the most of each call?

Calling for help can feel like a lot. A little planning makes each call easier, and you'll get further, faster.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

If you get put on hold or cut off

"Hi, I was just talking with someone about (what you need), and we got cut off."

"Can you help me pick up where we left off?"

"Is there a direct number I can use if this happens again?"

Bunkly, the Bunklow mascot
BUNKLY TIP

Keep going, friend

If one place can't help, ask them who can. Each call gets you closer.

What if I'm told no, or put on a waitlist?

A no from one place isn't a no from everyone. Programs have different rules, funds and space, and things change from week to week.

Keep your papers safe

Bunkly, the Bunklow mascot
BUNKLY TIP

You're doing great

Asking for help, and asking again, takes strength. I'm cheering you on every step of the way.
