A few things to know

Where can I get no cost clothes?

Where can I get no cost clothes?

No cost clothes usually come from clothing closets at churches, missions, shelters and day centers. Some open on set days, and some give out a voucher you can use at a thrift store.

The best way to find what's open this week is a quick call.

How to find no cost clothes, step by step

  1. Dial 211 and say your city or ZIP and what you need, like "work clothes" or "kids' shoes."
  2. Ask which clothing closets are open this week, the hours, and if you need a referral.
  3. Call the place first to check sizes and what they have right now.
  4. Bring a bag, and any referral letter they asked for.
  5. If you need clothes for a job, say so. Some places keep interview outfits.
  6. If they're out, ask when new donations usually come in.
SAY IT LIKE THIS

What to say when you call

"Hi. I'm looking for no cost clothes for [me, or my kids]. I'm near [your city or ZIP]."

"I need [work clothes, shoes, a coat, school clothes] in size [size]."

"Do I need a referral or an ID?"

"When is the best day to come?"

BUNKLY TIP

Ask about vouchers

Some shelters and churches hand out vouchers for thrift stores. It never hurts to ask, "Do you have a clothing voucher?" Easy peasy!

Where can I take a shower?

A few basics go a long way.

Feeling fresh isn't a luxury. It's part of taking care of you, and you deserve that.

From the Bunklow team

How do I get hygiene items like soap, diapers and pads?

Here's something a lot of folks don't know: the USDA says SNAP can't buy nonfood items like hygiene items, cleaning supplies and paper products. So these items usually come from other places.

EXAMPLE

Say you need diapers before payday in Dayton

Say you're down to the last few diapers, and your family gets WIC. Gem City Diaper Bank says it serves the greater Dayton area, for families enrolled in programs like WIC, SNAP, TANF or Medicaid based insurance. Families fill out an application and get a double supply every other month, for children up to age 3 and a half (or up to 5 with developmental delays).

You could also ask your WIC clinic or food pantry which nearby groups hand out diapers this week.

This is an example to show how it can go. It is not about a real person, and every situation is different. Source (As of October 22, 2026): https://www.gemcitydiaperbank.org/

BUNKLY TIP

Keep a little kit with you

A zip bag with a toothbrush, a few wipes, deodorant and a spare pair of socks fits in any backpack. It's a small thing that helps a lot.

How do I take care of myself in hot weather?

These are simple, common sense ideas, not medical advice.

Dry socks are one of the best things you can do for your feet.

How do I stay warm and dry in cold weather?

Ohio winters can bring snow, ice and very cold wind. These are simple ideas, not medical advice.

Where can I get diapers and period products?

Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank in Cincinnati notes that diapers aren't covered by programs like SNAP or WIC, so diaper banks help fill the gap. Most diaper banks don't hand out diapers directly.

They supply partner agencies, like social service offices, clinics and churches.

BUNKLY TIP

Ask at WIC and the pantry too

WIC can't buy diapers, but WIC clinics and food pantries often know which nearby groups hand them out. It never hurts to ask. You've got this!

What should I wear to a job interview?

You don't need anything fancy. Clean, neat and comfortable is what matters most.

Are there ways to stretch money for clothes and basics in Ohio?

Yes, a few real ones.
