Walk the home at move in and make sure every item has a comment, with photos to match.
Keep a copy of the lease, the deposit receipt and the move in report together.
Share repair needs in writing as they happen, so small issues don’t become charges.
Ask for a pre move out walk about a week or two before you leave.
Give your forwarding address in writing so your deposit and any statement can reach you.

If you disagree with a charge

Compare the charge to your move in report and photos.
Reach out kindly in writing, explain what you see, and attach your photos.
Ask for receipts or invoices for any repair charges.
Look for a fair middle ground together. A calm conversation solves most issues.

Read the notice section of your lease and mark the date notice is due on your calendar.
Give notice in writing, dated and signed, and deliver it the way your lease describes.
Keep a copy of your notice and any confirmation that it was received.
Set up mail forwarding and update your address with banks, employers and services.
Schedule utility shutoffs or transfers for the right date, after your final walk if you can.
Ask for a pre move out walk a week or two before you leave, so there is time to fix anything.
Clean thoroughly, remove all belongings and trash, and take dated photos of every room.
