Quick answers

How does a protection order work in Nevada?

You can ask a court for a temporary protection order. It can usually be issued for up to 45 days, and the judge can sign it before the other person is told. After a hearing, it can be extended for up to two years. Forms are on the Nevada courts self help site.

Can I keep my new address secret?

Yes. The Nevada Confidential Address Program gives you a substitute address for public records and forwards your mail for free. You sign up in person with a CAP certified advocate at a local victim services agency. Call 888 432 6189 to learn more.

Can I lose my housing because of the abuse?

In HUD housing, like public housing and Section 8 vouchers, you cannot be denied or evicted because you are a survivor. You can ask for an emergency transfer to a safer unit, and the landlord can remove only the abuser from the lease. What you share must be kept private.

What proof do I need for VAWA?

Your housing provider must ask in writing and give you at least 14 business days. You choose the proof: a HUD self certification form, a signed letter from a professional, or a police or court record.
