Quick answers

How do I get a New Mexico ID card?

Go in person to any MVD Field Office. For a standard ID, bring one proof of identity and identification number, plus two proofs of New Mexico residency. All papers must be originals. They can give you a temporary ID while your card is mailed. The MVD line is 888 683 4636, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm.

What if I cannot show lawful status?

MVD says you may only apply for the non compliant Standard ID card. Ask MVD at 888 683 4636 which papers it accepts.

How do I get my birth certificate?

Only people born in New Mexico can get one, and only close family or someone with a legal interest can order it. By mail or in person the fee is $10 per copy. Do not send cash by mail. Online or phone orders go through VitalChek at 877 284 0963 and cost more. Albuquerque Midtown office: 505 841 4185. Santa Fe: 505 827 0121.

I have no street address. Can I still ask for a birth certificate by mail?

The mail form asks for a physical street address, even if you also use a P.O. box. If you do not have one, call Vital Records at 505 827 0121 or 866 534 0051 and ask what they accept.

Is there a limit on replacement Social Security cards?

Yes. The Social Security Administration limits replacement cards to 3 per year and 10 in a lifetime. Cards for a legal name change do not count. After you hit a limit, you can still get a card for reasons like hardship or a mistake by SSA, with proof. Go to ssa.gov for how to apply.
