Quick answers

How do I get a Vermont non driver ID?

Your first Non Driver ID must be applied for in person at a DMV office, with form VL 017, fees and documents. The main office is at 120 State Street, Montpelier, open Monday to Friday, 7:45 am to 4 pm, except opening at 8:45 am on the third Wednesday of the month. If you have a card from another state, you must give it up.

How much does it cost?

A Non Driver ID is $29 for 4 years, and a replacement is $24. If you get SSI or Social Security Disability, it is $10 for a new or renewed ID and $5 for a replacement, with proof. The fee page does not mention a homeless waiver, so call the DMV at 802 828 2000 to ask.

What documents does the DMV accept?

For identity and date of birth, one of these: a valid passport or birth certificate, a valid Permanent Resident Card, a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship, or a Real ID compliant license or ID. If your name changed, bring a certified marriage, adoption or divorce record. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted.

How do I get a birth certificate?

A certified copy is $10, plus $2 if you order online. The town or city clerk is listed as the fastest and cheapest way. Only family members, legal guardians and certain others can order, and you must show valid ID. Call Vital Records at 800 439 5008 in Vermont or 802 863 7275.

Where can I get mail if I have no address?

The COTS Daystation in Burlington lets you send and receive mail, and the Groundworks Drop In Center in Brattleboro gives a mailing address. Call COTS at 802 864 7402 or Groundworks at 802 302 8300.

All done. You are ready, friend.

Bunkly tip: a birth certificate often comes first, because the DMV lists a valid passport or birth certificate as the main proof of identity.
