Chapter 1. What a Small Fix Really Is
A small fix is a simple, safe job that most adults can do with basic tools, that does not change the home, and that can be undone if needed. Tightening a loose hinge screw is a small fix. Replacing a light switch is not.
Signs It Is a Small Fix
- It needs only basic hand tools.
- It does not involve wiring, gas or the main water supply.
- It does not need a ladder or climbing.
- It does not change the structure or look of the home.
- The lease allows it, or the owner said yes.
Signs It Is Not
- It involves electricity beyond plugging in or resetting.
- It involves gas in any way.
- It needs cutting into walls, floors or ceilings.
- It needs a ladder or a roof.
- You feel unsure, rushed or unsafe.
Bunkly’s field tipWhen you are not sure whether a job is a small fix, ask yourself: “If this goes wrong, could someone get hurt or could the home be damaged?” If the answer is maybe, call the owner.
This is a short sample from The Perfect Toolkit. The full book has all 10 chapters, a checklist for every chapter and the worksheets.
