Where to start

The short version

A clean home should also be a safe one, and a few simple habits prevent nearly all cleaning accidents.

Never mix cleaners, especially bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other acids. Use one product at a time and rinse in between.

Read every label, open windows or run fans, wear gloves for strong products, and keep cleaners in original containers, up high or locked.

If someone breathes fumes or swallows a cleaner, get them to fresh air and call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 in an emergency.

Rules about cleaning and disposal differ from place to place, so we’d gently encourage a quick look at the rules where your home is. If you ever have questions, we would love to help.

Four simple rules

  1. 1
    Never mix cleaners

Bleach mixed with ammonia, vinegar or other acids can create dangerous gases. One product at a time.

  2. 2
    Read the label first

The label tells you how to use, dilute, ventilate and store the product safely.

  3. 3
    Fresh air while you clean

Open windows and run fans, especially in small rooms like bathrooms.

  4. 4
    Original containers, up high

Keep products in their original containers, closed tightly, out of reach of children and pets.

Safe cleaning checklist

From the guide’s own checklist. Tick each one as you go. Your ticks stay on this device. These are examples; your home may need others.

0 of 11

Never mix these together

  1. Bleach plus ammonia makes a toxic gas.
  2. Bleach plus vinegar or other acids, like some toilet bowl and rust cleaners, makes chlorine gas.
  3. Bleach plus rubbing alcohol is also dangerous.

These are common examples, not a complete list. When in doubt, use one product, rinse with water, and air the room out.

If someone is exposed to a cleaner

  1. If fumes make anyone cough, wheeze or feel dizzy, get everyone into fresh air right away.
  2. Call 911 right away if the person is having trouble breathing, won’t wake up or has a seizure. This is an emergency.
  3. If someone swallowed a cleaner or got it in their eyes or on their skin, call Poison Help at 1 800 222 1222, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  4. For eyes or skin, rinse with plenty of clean water as Poison Help directs.
  5. Keep the product container with you so you can tell helpers exactly what it was.
  6. Once everyone is safe, open windows to air out the room.

You did exactly the right thing.
