The short answer

If you don't know where to start, dial 211. Apply for SNAP online at MarylandBenefits or call DHS at 1 800 332 6347. Facing eviction? Call 1 888 465 2468 to see if you qualify for a lawyer at no cost.

Need help tonight?

Step 1: Dial 211

211 Maryland connects you to local help for shelter, food, bills and more. Maryland courts also say to call 211 to ask for a lawyer through the eviction counsel program.

"Hi. I'm in [your city or ZIP]. I need help with [shelter, food, a bill] today."

"Is there anything open now? What do I need to bring?"

Step 2: Food and health coverage

  • Behind on rent? A landlord must give you 10 days' notice before filing. See Legal and tenant help.
  • Someone hurting you at home? Find your county program through the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence, or call 1 800 799 7233.
  • Crisis? Call or text 988.
