A simple guide to packing blessing bags for neighbors without a home in North Dakota, with NDSU Extension food storage tips, CDC cold and heat tips, and a 211 card.
Hi friend. A small bag with a hat, warm socks, snacks and a help card can mean a lot to someone on the street. North Dakota winters are serious, so pack smart and keep it simple.
Pick sealed foods that keep in a cool, dry place away from heat. NDSU Extension says not to buy dented or bulging cans, and that dusty cans or torn labels can mean old stock. Its guide's rule is, when in doubt, throw it out.

CDC says to wear several layers of loose fitting clothing, a hat, a scarf or mask covering the face, and mittens or gloves. Good bag items are a hat, gloves and a scarf. Shivering, confusion, clumsy hands, slurred speech and drowsiness are warning signs of hypothermia, so a note about getting medical help is useful.

Water matters most. CDC says to drink more water than usual and not wait until you're thirsty. Add a note about cool places like air conditioned libraries and malls. Muscle cramps, headache, nausea or vomiting are signs to get medical care.
