Roommates
Split Chores by Zone, Not by Guilt
Vague cleaning rules create roommate resentment and leave deposit-sensitive work until the last minute. Divide the home into zones such as kitchen, bathroom, floors, trash and recycling, then rotate them weekly. Add monthly jobs like wiping the fridge, slider tracks, fan covers and behind the stove, and post the schedule where everyone sees it.
Why this helps
Nobody wants a cold war over the dishes, haha. When chores are shared and posted, the hard jobs don't pile up for the last week, and both the deposit and the friendship do better.
Do this
- Divide the home into zones such as kitchen, bathroom, floors, trash, and recycling. Clear zones mean nobody has to wonder whose turn it is.
- Rotate the zones each week. That way nobody is stuck with the bathroom forever.
- Add monthly jobs: wiping the fridge, the slider tracks, the fan covers, and behind the stove. These are the spots that get forgotten, so a reminder helps.
- Post the schedule where everyone sees it. The fridge door is a great spot.
Next step
Grab a pen and a sheet of paper and sketch out your zones together. If you're just moving in, do it in your first week, and stick it up the same day!
