No Heat? Check These 4 Things First
Before reporting a no-heat problem, check whether the thermostat is set to heat, a breaker has tripped, the furnace panel is closed, and the filter is overdue. If the system still does not run, report it promptly and describe what you checked. In cold weather, open sink cabinets and let a faucet drip slightly while you wait for help.
Why this helps
Sometimes the heat isn't broken, it's just switched off. A few quick checks tell you which one it is, and a clear report helps the right repair get sent. A little drip helps the pipes while you wait.
Do this
- Check that the thermostat is set to heat. It's an easy one to miss.
- Check whether a breaker has tripped. A tripped breaker can shut things down quietly.
- Check that the furnace panel is closed. If it's not, the furnace may not run.
- Check whether the filter is overdue. A clogged filter can get in the way.
- If it still does not run, report it promptly and say what you already checked. Then whoever comes out knows where to start.
- In cold weather, open the sink cabinets and let a faucet drip slightly while you wait. It gives your pipes a little help.
Next step
Run through the four checks, then pick up the phone and tell them what you found. If you're not sure how, we're happy to help!
