Rent Is Heavy Right Now
Rent is heavy right now, and we know it. On September 23, 2026, NPR reported Urban Institute research: nearly 22% of middle-income renters could not pay the full rent at least once in 2025, because they could not afford it. A year earlier it was about 14%. If the rent does not fit, say so before the due date. Then look at a room, a shared room, a house that fits, or a spot for an RV. Posting and finding listings are free, and we will do our best to help with every single step.
Why this helps
That jump, from about 14% to nearly 22% in one year, is families choosing food, medicine, or the car, and then falling behind on the place. A late surprise helps no one. An early, plain conversation gives both people a chance to find a fit.
Do this
- If you will be short, tell the landlord or manager before the due date. Say how much you can pay, and the date the rest can come.
- Do not wire money, and do not pay a deposit before you have toured the place and checked who owns it.
- If the whole place does not fit, look at a private room, a shared room, or a spot for an RV. A smaller fit is still a home.
- If you have a place and someone tells you they are short, hear them out and write down what you both agree. Use the same rules for every person.
- Read the NPR story so the number is not a rumor you heard secondhand.
Next step
Next, build a one-page rental resume, and verify the landlord before you pay anything.
