Quick answers

Who can I call or text in Utah?

The Utah Domestic Violence Coalition runs the 24 hour LINKLine. Call or text 1 800 897 5465. It is free and private. If advocates are busy, your call goes to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Official page: udvc.org

Is there a national hotline too?

Yes. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is at 800 799 7233. You can also chat online, or text START to 88788. A live advocate can listen and help you plan for safety. The Hotline does not give money or hotel vouchers, but it can connect you to local help.

Where can I stay safe?

Domestic violence providers in Utah can offer emergency shelter, a crisis line, case management, transitional housing, children's services, food and personal care items. In Salt Lake City, YWCA Utah has a licensed emergency shelter for survivors and their families, and the Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center offers free and private services. Call the LINKLine for the shelter nearest you.

How do I get a protective order?

Utah Courts has a Get protection from Abuse section that explains protective orders and stalking injunctions. It also has MyPaperwork, a free tool that gives step by step help and prepares the forms. The Utah Domestic Violence Coalition does not give legal advice, but its legal support page explains what protections exist.

Will what I say stay private?

In Utah, domestic violence shelter and community advocates must keep what you tell them private, unless you give written consent. The exceptions are mandatory reporting of child abuse and a court order. Advocates at police or prosecutor offices have some limits on privacy, so ask before you share.
