Quick answers

What is Lifeline?

Lifeline is a federal program that lowers the monthly cost of phone, internet or bundled service. The standard benefit is a discount of up to $9.25 a month. You may qualify by income, or by being in a program like SNAP or Medicaid.

How do I apply in Utah?

There are two steps. First, find out if you are eligible and apply through the Lifeline site. Then, if approved, pick a participating phone or internet company and contact them to set up service. Offers vary a lot, so compare plans. Federal law limits Lifeline to one benefit per household, except in group homes or when several families share one home.

Where can I get online for free?

Public libraries are a good place. The Salt Lake City Public Library site lets you get a library card online and lists locations and hours, and it has a Print a File or Document page. Utah 211 also lets you chat or text your zip code to 801 845 2211, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:45 pm. Ask your library what computer rules it has.

Bunkly tip: take your time picking a Lifeline company. The plans are very different, and you must contact the company yourself after you are approved.
