Quick answers

I got eviction papers. How long do I have?

You have only 3 business days to respond after you get the Summons and Complaint. Business days leave out weekends and court holidays. If you miss the deadline, you could lose your case automatically. You respond by filing a written Answer with the court.

How do I file my Answer?

You can file in person at the court clerk's office, with eFiling through My Court Case, by email to your court's email address, or by mail, which is the slowest. Email documents must be PDFs, in English, completely filled out, and in black and white. The page is only for people who rent a home or apartment.

Where can I get a free lawyer or legal advice?

Utah Legal Services gives free civil legal help to people who can't afford a lawyer. Call 801 328 8891 or apply online. In some cases you may qualify for a court appointed lawyer, like when you face possible jail time or a parent case. Free legal advice clinics with volunteer lawyers are also listed by Utah Courts.

The Utah State Law Library at 450 South State Street has free legal books and research tools. Call 801 238 7990. Staff can't give legal advice.
