Heavy Rain: Check Downspouts and Grading
The best time to spot drainage problems is while it's raining. Walk the property and watch where each downspout discharges, look for water pooling against the foundation, and check the crawl space access for standing water. Take photos, then add extensions or splash blocks in dry weather.
Why this helps
A storm is a good teacher. You can watch where the water really goes, and photos from that day help you pick the right fix once the sun returns.
Do this
- Walk the property while it is raining. You can only see the problem while the water is moving.
- Watch where each downspout lets the water out. It helps to know where every drop ends up.
- Look for water pooling against the foundation. Standing water near the house is worth noticing early.
- Check the crawl space door for standing water. It's out of sight, so it's easy to overlook.
- Take photos, then add extensions or splash blocks when the weather is dry. The photos make it easy to plan the fix.
