PNW Landlords: Gutters and Moss Are Your Fall Job
Pacific Northwest rain makes gutters, downspouts and roof moss part of every fall property check. Clear gutters, confirm downspouts send water away from the foundation, and arrange qualified roof work when moss needs attention. Ask renters to report leaks or pooling water from the ground, and document the inspection before the wet season peaks.
Why this helps
Heavy rain shows you exactly where a gutter is clogged, usually by sending water toward the house. Clearing it and jotting down what you saw gets you ahead of the wettest months.
Do this
- Clear the gutters. Water needs a clear path to leave.
- Confirm the downspouts send water away from the foundation. Water sitting near the house causes trouble.
- Arrange qualified roof work when moss needs attention. Roof work is best left to the right person.
- Ask the people living there to report leaks or pooling water that they can see from the ground. They see the place up close every day.
- Write down what you inspected, ahead of the heaviest rain. A dated note is a good record to have later.
Next step
Pick a dry afternoon this fall and walk the gutters with a notepad. The longest rains will be glad to find them clear!
