Where to start

The short version

Clutter happens to everyone, and it can quietly make a home less safe. This is about safety, not perfection.

Keep exits, hallways and escape windows clear, and give heaters and stoves plenty of space.

Start small: fifteen minutes a day or one area at a time, with keep, donate and toss boxes.

If it feels overwhelming, friends, family and professionals can help without judgment.

Safety rules differ from place to place, so we’d gently encourage a quick look at the rules where your home is. If you ever have questions, we would love to help.

Four simple rules

  1. 1
    Keep exits clear

Every doorway, hallway and escape window should stay open and easy to reach.

  2. 2
    Keep heat sources clear

Give heaters, stoves, furnaces and water heaters plenty of space.

  3. 3
    Start small

One drawer, one shelf or fifteen minutes a day is a real start.

  4. 4
    Ask for help kindly

Friends, family and professionals can help, without judgment.

If clutter feels like too much

  1. Take a breath. Feeling overwhelmed is common, and you are not alone.
  2. Pick one safety step first, like clearing the path to the front door.
  3. Ask a trusted friend or family member to help for an hour.
  4. If letting go of things feels very hard, it can help to talk with your doctor or a counselor. They can offer support without judgment.
  5. Look for local organizers, donation pickups or community programs.
  6. And if you rent, let the owner know if you need a little time or help. Asking early is exactly the right thing to do.

Every cleared space counts.
